Seminars
Aviation and Pilot Development
In addition to offering primary and advanced flight training courses, Safety in Motion Flight Center offers a series of aviation-related and pilot-development-focused seminars. Our instructors are members of the FAA Safety Team and offer a wide array of seminars such as: Pacific NW Mountain Flying, Aviation Weather, Aircraft Systems, Preventative Maintenance, and other informative/motivational seminars presented in elementary, middle & high schools, flight clubs, and other community events.
So whether you are simply curious about what aviation is all about, or looking to deepen your knowledge on a specific subject, Safety in Motion is here to help! A list of current seminars we provide is listed below.

Flight in the Pacific Northwest offers pilots and their passengers access to some of the most beautiful scenery in the world! This type of flying, however, does involve increased risk that needs to be planned for and mitigated. This seminar covers mountain meteorology, route planning, performance planning, precautionary and emergency landing considerations, and survival techniques. Upon completion of the seminar, attendees will receive a logbook endorsement that they have attended a mountain flying course. To register click HERE.

Weather affects every aspect of aviation from aircraft performance, en route turbulence and icing, thunderstorms, adverse wind conditions, and adverse weather produced by our local mountainous terrain. In this course we’ll review local aviation weather phenomena, review weather products available to pilots, and look at some new “electronic flight bag” (EFB) programs that provide weather to include their limitations. Flying in the winter is awesome! The air is typically more stable with less turbulence, airplane engines perform better with denser air, and when high pressure moves into the region and provides blue skies, the views are spectacular! In this seminar, we will discuss winter weather flight operations to include winter weather considerations, protection of your aircraft to include engine pre-heating techniques and flight planning. In this seminar, we will look at Class B airspace and the operations conducted within and around it. Operating in and around this type of busy airspace is fairly simple, as long as you do a little prior planning and understand why it’s there. We will evaluate the Seattle SEATAC Class B airspace system, the Mode-C Veil, aircraft equipment requirements, and operational requirements. To register click HERE.

ForeFlight EFB and similar software applications like Garmin Pilot and FlyQ are excellent tools to help pilots plan flights more effectively and efficiently. In this seminar, we will focus on ForeFlight covering the basics of platforms to run it on and basic set-up, basic flight planning, use of charts and planning tools, and obtaining weather and filing flight plans. This is a 2-hour presentation. The 1st hour will be dedicated to general software operation and using VFR flight. In the 2nd hour, we will focus on the use of ForeFlight for instrument IFR flight. So, you’ve decided to pursue getting your initial pilot certificate, or continuing for advanced certificates and ratings—good for you! In this seminar, we will discuss how you can set yourself up for success in your flight training to ensure you are maximizing your flight training dollar through effective scheduling of your flight instructor and airplanes, proper study habits and resources, and other strategies to help you not only focus on your training but have a great time doing it! This course is a must-see for new flight students. To register click HERE.

Just like when you earned your driver’s license, you ultimately had to take that car ride with the evaluator who graded your performance. It’s no different in aviation. At the end of your training program, you will meet with a Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) and take a practical exam (aka “Checkride”). For many pilots, this can be an anxiety-inducing prospect, but it doesn’t need to be. The DPE wants you to succeed and pass the exam. Their main job is to simply approve the application that you will submit to get your pilot certificate or rating. The DPE simply evaluates your performance against the FAA standards. In this seminar, we will discuss the process, how to properly prepare, and look at some test-taking tips to help ensure your success! To register click HERE.

There are several preventative maintenance tasks pilots can perform on their own airplanes and thus save the expense of calling in an aviation mechanic. Appendix A to Part 43 lists 31 tasks that pilots can do themselves and the conditions under which they can do it. Unfortunately, many do not know how to perform some of these tasks. This seminar series will pick an item from the list and walk pilots through how to perform the task correctly and make the appropriate logbook entries. As these seminars are offered, the maintenance task will be listed in the title. To register click HERE.
